This strange little handle and worm was part of an important French collection. It 1902 it was shown in an exhibition entitled "The Treasures of Strasbourg" As we all know cork-sealed wine bottles were not in common use until the 17th century or later. So, what is this and why was it described as a corkscrew? It's a mystery I can't solve and my guess is that it is not associated with the Roman Empire but rather is a primitive 17th c. device for removing corks from wine bottles,i.e, a foreunner of the modern corkscrew. Length of handle 3.25" approx. or 8 cm.
