New book THE EVOLUTION OF SMALL CORKSCREWS, Ferd Peters
Pocket corkscrews, sometimes with pocket knives, became increasingly popular by the end of the 18 th
century. Chatelaines and gentleman’s pocket watches were accompanied by corkscrews. Corkscrews
became a necessity for many traveling cases. In addition to wine corks, bottles were used for many
other liquids, including perfume, ink, varnish, mineral water, and ginger beer. These required the use of
different types of corkscrews, including miniature size.
As Ferd Peters has mentioned, miniature corkscrews are a major subject in his book. They are a
highlight, and he has amassed a large number of examples. An impressive assemblage has been
gathered, many from his own collection. His book will fit well, joining the corkscrew literature.
